Friendship: An Invaluable Bond of Life

As we journey through life, certain relationships quietly find a permanent place in the deepest corners of our hearts. Friendship is one such extraordinary bond—a relationship not built on blood ties, but nurtured through trust, affection, sincerity, and mutual understanding. It is only after moving to a new city that I have come to realise, more profoundly than ever, the true value of friendship.

From childhood through school, college, and university, I have met countless people, some of whom gradually became an integral part of my life. I have always believed in nurturing relationships and preserving the bonds that life has gifted me. To me, friendship is not merely about spending time together; it is about remaining connected through changing circumstances, geographical distances, and the passage of time. Even now, in my forties, I continue to cherish old friendships while welcoming new ones with equal warmth and sincerity.

Perhaps this is why I often advise my only daughter never to lose touch with her childhood friends, especially those from her hometown and school days. Life will introduce her to many new people, and new relationships will naturally develop along the way. Yet, the friendships formed during childhood deserve a special place in her heart. They carry an innocence, purity, and simplicity that are difficult to recreate in later years. People may change, circumstances may change, and addresses may change, but the memories of growing up together remain priceless.

However, life does not always unfold according to our expectations. Sometimes, we find ourselves wondering whether those whom we once considered close are gradually drifting away. A missed call, an unanswered message, or a prolonged silence can quietly create a sense of hurt and disappointment. Perhaps the distance is never intentional. Everyone is occupied with their own responsibilities, families, careers, children, and countless challenges of everyday life. In the constant rush of modern living, finding time for even the most cherished relationships can become difficult. Yet, somewhere in our hearts, a small expectation remains—that the warmth of friendship should never disappear beneath the weight of our busy lives.

I firmly believe that maintaining a friendship does not require hours of conversation or constant companionship. Sometimes, a simple message, an unexpected phone call, a reference to an old memory, or even a small gesture of checking in is enough to keep a relationship alive. Such little efforts silently convey a beautiful message: distance may have increased, but the emotional connection remains unchanged. In an age when technology has made communication easier than ever, it would be unfortunate if our relationships gradually became lifeless due to a lack of genuine affection and effort.

The golden days of our lives are not meant to remain confined to old photographs or forgotten pages of memory albums. They represent our journey of growing up—the laughter, tears, innocent mischief, achievements, failures, and countless moments when we stood beside one another. Today, we may be scattered across different cities, leading entirely different lives, but there is no reason to forget the relationships that are deeply rooted in our past.

Life, after all, is unpredictable. Therefore, there is little meaning in allowing misunderstandings to grow, waiting endlessly for someone else to make the first move, or letting ego create unnecessary distances. We never know whether the opportunity to speak to someone today will still be there tomorrow. If we genuinely care about someone, why should we hesitate to express it? After all, as the beautiful phrase reminds us, Kal Ho Naa Ho—there may be no tomorrow.

In today's fast-paced and increasingly practical world, some may consider this way of thinking overly emotional or sentimental. But I believe that emotions are not a sign of weakness; they are an essential part of meaningful human relationships. Beyond our achievements, professional success, social status, and material possessions, we all need a few people with whom we can revisit old memories, laugh without hesitation, share our deepest thoughts, and sometimes even find comfort in silence.

To me, friendship is one of the most precious gifts bestowed upon us by the Almighty. Preserving its beauty does not require grand promises or extraordinary gestures. All it needs is a little care, genuine affection, mutual understanding, and the willingness to remember one another.

Ultimately, I have come to realise that the true beauty of friendship does not lie merely in how many years we have known each other, but in how lovingly we have managed to preserve that connection through all those years.

So, let us make a little time for our friends, even amidst our busy schedules. Let us reach out to those from our past, revisit cherished memories, and remind them that they still hold a special place in our lives.

For, at the end of life's journey, what truly remains is not our position, wealth, social standing, or list of achievements. What remains are a few special people, meaningful relationships, and a treasure trove of unforgettable memories.
